“Be sensitive to our culture, stop copying the west” …. SIGH

Posted by: BamBam In: a post by BamBam| hyperbole reality| random rant `skip`

I honestly don’t get this argument, do the people that use that argument really understand the culture that was bequeathed to them ? Hell do they even care ?
I think simply the answer is “NO” they simply find it easier to be delusional and ignore the issues that offend their sensibilities with the reaction of “we don’t have that in our culture, it’s of foreign origin”, “I wish they would imitate the good things from the west” and “acknowledging those ills promotes them and makes people practice those things”. Personally I had it.
This is just my opinion and I’m not trying to be unbiased …
Read this carefully, no matter how many times you pray, repeat in your head and/or wish things away they will never disappear! Those issue are popping like spring flowers now not because people are imitating the west its because our culture is no longer as isolated as it was.
Being sensitive to our culture only exasperates the problem, our culture is one where vices and sins are tolerated as long as it is in private. As long as they, the people around us and the public, don’t talk about it, then all is good. As long as they don’t know!
Now that the genie is out and people are talking about those issues we hear those bleached out cries parroted over and over.
The solution is no longer more monitoring, more legislation, and more prohibition. The solution is more education and placing trust in the individuals and empowering them to take the right choice. Imposing morality by social pressure will only cause more friction.
we have people suggesting things such as [quote]

“For example, watching night clubs closely, tracing non-Jordanian prostitutes, enlightening parents about the importance of talking to their kids about sex, watching more closely for people spreading and selling pornographic material, promoting rules and organizations which make marriage easier”

Then we have the “Those who are straying from their religion are to blame, not the conservatives or the religion itself.” people. Let me reiterate this since it may have not sunk in deep enough for it to stick, sex is practiced by all types of people the fact that they don’t talk about it doesn’t mean that they don’t do it.
It’s usually those that allow their understanding of religion to deny them the right to discuss issues of sex that are at risk in our society. They end up knowing little to nothing about how to practice safe sex and when they do “sin” they are the ones that are exposing themselves to those dangers and not the “sinners”. They actually acknowledge that they will do those things and seek out the knowledge to protect themselves. Let’s face reality here people, we all “sin” !
Though i might be quoting from one post but this was a reoccurring theme in a lot of posts, I might be living in a bubble but atleast i try to acknowledge the existence of other bubbles rather then see them as mirages.

People still like to act conservative when it comes to sex, although now it is so common that to find a virgin is next to impossible.

Things happen, and lots of shit happens, and yes, they mostly happen behind closed doors. But when it is out in the open, there is no need to decapitate anyone or blame other people for what is wrong with us.

We are solely responsible for what we choose to affect us. Even if sex was “imported” from another culture, we can still deal with it through education and enlightenment rather than peppering our kids’ mouths and shutting them forever

You know what, after the things I’ve heard that happen amongst Arabs (things that I find too inappropriate for me to discuss, but i’m sure you are intelligent enough to figure it out) I pretty much can say that I believe that all the “negativity” that we blame on the west, was actually originated from the Arab world.
Things like homosexuality, prostitution and other issues have been with humanity eversince the beginning of time. Before Islam, Arabs were, in my opinion, the least civilized of races. I dont see why Arabs feel that they have the right to point fingers at other races, when we all know that in every race there are the good and the bad.
KJ: what exactly did you mean when you wrote that sex was imported to us from another culture? I dont mean to sound rude, but that sounds very naive.

Kid, you are something else. Whenever I think I’ve gotten to know you, you prove me wrong.

KJ hmm I agree in spirit, but i don’t think we can choose what effects us just how we react to it.

Eman where did u disappear ? thanks you are far too kind and you make me blush :*)
yislam tomek 3alli 2oltee, and we point the finger because we see all the negative as alien and foreign to us. We don’t even recognize it as something that we’ve done, it’s always someone else and if all else fails … its the devil’s fault.
As for what kj said i think he meant that they blame the sexualization of culture on the west

I’ve been quite busy these past few weeks. With my classes and work, I hardly get time to myself.
Well, I kinda figured that’s what kj meant, but still, I do disagree.
It’s like saying that we are immune to everything that has to do with sex. Maybe in the east people are not as open about these issues as they are here, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t occur. The only difference is that it is more accepted and tolerable here than it is back home.
KJ: I hope you weren’t offended by my comment. I apologize for “over-stepping” (I’m not even sure if that’s a word) my boundaries.
I’ve realized that not too many Arab bloggers like to be criticized.

btw bambam, I haven’t forgotten about the “psychoanalysis” (yes, I’m trying to sound Fruedian), just haven’t had the chance :)
